Oranjezicht Iyengar Yoga Centre
7 Cairnmount Avenue, Cape Town
The Oranjezicht Yoga Centre is a small, intimate studio that stands apart from the new, large centres. It opened its doors in 1999 and has survived the passing yoga ‘trends’ by maintaining the classical, integral practice of Yoga in its purest sense.
All teaching from this centre, either individual or group sessions, is run on a private basis by appointment only. Our three teachers profiled below focus on providing sessions in their own capacity.
Yoga is one of the most ancient and rewarding forms of exercise and offers tremendous benefits. The word ‘yoga’ means to join together, to ‘harness’, as in ‘yoke’, to join together the mental, physical and spiritual. It helps us return to our innate sense of wisdom and intuition; a means of centring ourselves in our often frenetic lives. In our practice we don’t compete nor push our bodies beyond their own limitations and capabilities. Whilst practicing yoga we become aware of the necessity of working with our bodies rather than against them. It becomes a lifestyle and the more you put into your practice, the more you will get out of it.
Equipment and yoga mats are provided free of charge.

Turn left at the robots into Camp Street. Turn immediately right into Molteno Road. Go almost to the top of Molteno Road. Turn right into Cairnmount Avenue (Opposite Roseberry Avenue – easier to spot the Roseberry sign on your left so look for it). The studio is no 7 Cairnmount Avenue (last house on the left).

Henry was introduced to yoga at the age of 28 while looking for a way to improve his life. He started his yoga training under David Jacobs and became interested in the Iyengar method of Yoga, which focuses on the precision and alignment of Yoga poses.
Henry was captured by the dynamic workout yoga gives us and with many years of practice and teaching experience behind him, he still considers himself to be a student of Yoga.

Riva began practicing yoga as way to de-stress like many that come to yoga. After trying a few other yoga methods, she came to Iyengar Yoga. Her first Iyengar Yoga teacher was Jenny Morris in Johannesburg. Riva loved everything about Iyengar yoga, the discipline of the body as well as the calm state of mind after the class. She remembers being amazed that she was doing everything wrong. Being very flexible, awareness and control take longer to develop. Riva is a perpetual student and is today privileged to attend classeswith Brigitta Tummon, a Senior Iyengar teacher with many years of experience, who is her mentor and friend. Riva regularly attends the teachers classes, workshops with international Senior Iyengar teachers as well as having attended classes at the Iyengar Institute in Pune, India. She passes her understanding onto her students with gratitude to the Iyengars for their teachings.

Claudia Gurwitz began practicing yoga in 1993. Her fascination with Yoga Therapy as a means of making yoga inclusive to all students, results from her own back challenges. Iyengar Yoga thus provides a base for Claudia’s practice as it encompasses the depth and detail required for therapeutic process.
Claudia innovatively blends Hatha Yoga approaches, combining precision and alignment with breath, movement and flow. She uses hands on adjustments to enhance each student’s experience of asana (posture).
Claudia’s experience of Yoga is to bring lightness and grounding into our lives. Her classes are creative, fun and active.

Jane started practicing in 1997, initially in Cape Town with great local Iyengar teachers and then continued my studies in Amsterdam, where she undertook a 4 year yoga teacher training course, practicing and teaching under the watchful eye of Teresa Caldas in Amsterdam and Dona Holleman in Italy, acquiring the Classical Yoga Teacher Certificate in 2004. This Study allowed her to focus deeply on anatomy and the correct methods of assisting and correction, the advanced practice of all Asanas and Pranayama techniques and the study of the Sutras of Patanjali. Jane continues to seek out knowledge of the body both anatomically and energetically and apply that to her teaching. Her intention: to help those who come into her classes to find their power so they can truly be set free.
